Abuja, Nigeria – Sunday, September 28, 2025 – Today, as the global community commemorates International Universal Access to Information Day, Digicivic Initiative joins voices worldwide to reaffirm that access to information is the lifeblood of democracy, accountability, and civic participation.
In an era shaped by digital technologies and global interconnectivity, access to timely, reliable, and accurate information empowers citizens to make informed decisions, participate meaningfully in governance, and demand transparency from institutions. For civil society, the media, and grassroots communities, this right is the cornerstone for advancing justice, combating corruption, and safeguarding freedoms.
For us at Digicivic Initiative, this day underscores our commitment to advancing digital rights, open governance, and inclusive civic spaces. Access to timely, accurate, and reliable information empowers citizens to make informed choices, demand accountability, and shape the policies that affect their daily lives. It also strengthens civil society, nurtures press freedom, and protects the right of every individual to participate meaningfully in public life.
Yet, barriers remain. Across many societies, restrictive laws, internet disruptions, opaque governance practices, and disinformation continue to silence voices and obstruct the flow of information. These challenges disproportionately affect vulnerable groups, limiting civic space and undermining trust in public institutions.
On this day, we call on governments, private actors, and international institutions to uphold their obligations to protect and promote the right of access to information. They should prioritize transparency, uphold freedom of information laws, and safeguard the digital civic space. It is imperative to ensure that all individuals, especially vulnerable and grassroots communities, can access information freely and without fear.
Access to information fuels innovation, nurtures accountability, and strengthens democratic participation. As we commemorate this day, let us recommit to building open, transparent, and inclusive societies where every individual can freely seek, receive, and share information without fear or restriction.
As we celebrate this day, we also use this medium to encourage a concerted effort to stall misinformation and disinformation as they serve as triggers to rancour and disunity across various ecosystems. Digicivic Initiative reaffirms its dedication to strengthening the right to information, defending digital freedoms, and fostering an open and inclusive society where every voice counts and no one is left behind.
